Harlisha Newie-Joe is a proud Goemu and Wagadagam woman from Mabuyag and Badu Island located in the western region of Torres Straits. Grew up in Weipa on Algnith Country and now lives on Darkinjung Country in the Central Coast, NSW. Harlisha began training at NAISDA Dance College in 2020 and recently completed her Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance Performance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Artistically shaped and nurtured by many incredible artists including Vicki Van Hout, Jasmin Sheppard, Henrietta Baird, Thomas E.S Kelly and Lee Serle. She is apart of Jannawi Dance Clan and has performed with Wagana Dancers and Magun Zenadth Kes Dance Group. In 2024, Harlisha represented First Nations Australia at the Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture hosted in Hawaii, performing with Arpaka Dance Company lead by Dujon Niue. Harlisha featured in Song Spirals by Rosealee Pearson which premiered at Darwin Festival 2024, the work will return to Sydney Opera House 2025 and back to Country. Additionally, Harlisha performed in Plant a Promise, a work created by Kuku Yalanji choreographer and performer Henrietta Baird, which premiered at Sydney Festival in January 2025. Harlisha communicates through movement, using her body as a vessel to honour culture, story and connection.
